Used Aquariums

by admin

Used aquariums are a great way to introduce yourself to the fish world.  At some point or another people are intrigued by the idea of owning their own aquarium, however, they don’t realise the expense involved in buying all the equipment needed and the maintenance to ensure it is looking great at all times and that the fish are kept in the best possible environment.  One way around this is to go down the second hand route and invest your pennies in one of the used aquariums available.

There are a great selection of used aquariums available from people who have decided to upgrade and develop their aquarium with a larger tank or people who have simply decided the hobby is just not for them. This is great news for those fish lovers out there who want to pick up a tank along with a great bargain.  Most used aquariums come complete with all the kit required saving you a huge amount compared to buying your aquarium brand new.

However, you do need to be a bit careful when buying used aquariums, firstly that they are of a good enough quality, and secondly that the items you have bought and the accessories are in full working order and cleaned correctly before you use them.

One of the main cleaning no no’s is cleaning the used aquariums with washing up liquid or a cleaning product.  The best thing to clean the tank with is hot water, nothing more and nothing less.  The hood of the tank is an area that can get extremely dirty, and therefore needs attention when you buy used aquariums.  It can be quite difficult to clean, however a lot of sources recommend using vinegar to clean the hood area and to get it as near to its original state as possible.  However, do not clean the glass of the tank with vinegar and be extremely careful not to get vinegar on it.

Be sure to check the light strip is working correctly in the tank and if not go to your nearest DIY store to get a replacement as this will be much cheaper than going to your local aquatic shop.  You will also need to check that the air pump is in full working condition and again if it is not research into where to find the cheapest ones before heading to your local aquatic dealer, where you will be charged full price.  Some people think that they have to buy new aquatic gravel for their tank, however, this is not the case as if it appears in good enough condition you can use it straight into the tank or firstly wash it through with hot water.

Used aquariums are a great way to have your own tropical fish aquarium without spending huge amounts of money.  Therefore, before making a brand new purchase, be smart and check out the second hand aquarium market.
